Brandy Boies, Laurel Ridge Community College
Posted By John Elrick
Our program last week was presented by Brandy Boies, the Director of Communications and Outreach at Laurel Ridge Community College. Brandy shared the many opportunities available right down the road in Middletown where she has worked for more than 20 years.
Brandy reminded us that Laurel Ridge is much more than a place to earn an associate’s degree. From skilled trades and healthcare to four-year college transfers, the college also offers corporate training, including customized programs through fellow Rotarian Jay Foreman, and free assistance for small businesses.
Speaking from personal experience, Brandy shared that her daughter earned her bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University for less than $15,000, thanks to beginning her studies at Laurel Ridge. She also told the inspiring story of a formerly homeless individual who turned his life around in his 40s, eventually transferring to JMU on a full scholarship.
Affordability was a recurring theme. Brandy noted that Laurel Ridge awarded more than $9 million in financial aid and scholarships this past year, while dual-enrollment opportunities allow high school students to earn college credits at little or no cost.
The bottom line of her message was that education can change lives at any age, and financial circumstances should never keep someone from exploring the possibilities.
