Consider celebrating someone you know or admire by buying or adopting a flag to fly at the Healing Field of Honor. Some people remember a family veteran or a member in active service, while others dedicate flags to parents, teachers, or other personal heroes. Still, others buy a flag to recognize the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers. Volunteers will be on hand at the information booth (see hours below), to direct you to the flag you purchased.

You can also purchase additional flags on-site at Handley High School (see information booth hours below). We have people to assist you and can take credit cards on-site. Flags are available for viewing even when the booth isn’t open.

** If you have unwanted American flags that are worn or damaged, we’ll have a receptacle available during regular operating hours (see below) to dispose of them respectfully. **

For the sixth consecutive year, the Rotary Club of Winchester is preparing to display hundreds of American flags in front of John Handley High School, in a panorama called The Healing Field of Honor, presented by Navy Federal Credit Union.

This year’s theme is ‘Heroes Honored.  Souls Healed.”

Featuring 800 flags arranged in formation, the weeklong event coincides with Memorial Day, recognizing veterans, those currently serving in the military, first responders and other local heroes. Each flag represents an individual hero and conveys a story.  As part of VA250’s celebration of 250 years of America in Virginia, this year’s field of flags will also honor local heroes who played a role in Winchester and the Valley’s fight for independence.

These flags are sponsored and tagged with a special message to honor a hero in your life.  After the weekend’s display, the flags and poles can be yours to keep.  For more information, including flag sponsorship and how donors can help support this community event go to  www.HealingFieldWinchester.com

Funds raised each year by the Winchester Rotary are provided to local non-profits, including WATTS, The Evans Home for Children, the Highland Food Pantry, CCAP and the Winchester Rescue Mission. Additionally, each year the club delivers Christmas gifts to children at the Evans Home and donates more than 800 Coats for Kids.  For this 2026 Healing Field of Honor event, profits will be applied to the “We Honor Veterans” program provided by Blue Ridge Care and the Frederick County/Winchester Law Enforcement Foundation.

Members of Winchester Rotary Club, joined by fellow community volunteers, set up the Healing Field of Honor, which this year will be displayed beginning May 21, with an opening ceremony at 6 PM featuring pre-event music, a guest speaker, patriotic tunes, a student essay winner, the arrival of a motorcycle memorial ride, a military flyby, and a parachute drop.

A closing ceremony is scheduled for May 25, at 3 PM, which will include a patriotic sing-along and reading of Gold Star veterans honored in this Healing Field of Honor

All events are free and open to the public.
