More Than Just Warmth: The Growing Impact of Coats for Kids

At last week’s program, Larry Weiss and Nancy Baker took the floor to share an update on one of our club’s most cherished initiatives: Coats for Kids.

Since 2010, this project has been dedicated to a simple but vital mission: keeping local children warm. Through collaborative partnerships with the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley, Operation Warm, and various local agencies, the program has successfully distributed an incredible 15,000 new winter coats since its inception.

This year, the team is setting the bar high with a goal to distribute another 1,150 coats.

The Real Impact of a New Coat

Representatives from several organizations that help distribute these coats joined us at the meeting, including:

• CCAP

• Froggy’s Closet

• Bright Futures

• Winchester Day Preschool

• Timber Ridge

• Freemont St. Nursery

These community partners reminded us that the impact of this program goes far beyond physical warmth. For many children, receiving a brand-new coat provides a profound sense of pride and comfort.

One representative shared an unforgettable story about a three-year-old boy who recently received a coat through the program. It was the first new piece of clothing he had ever owned. He was so proud and comforted by it that he wore it straight for two weeks, refusing to take it off.

It’s stories like this that remind us: we aren’t just handing out winter gear. We are handing out dignity, confidence, and care.

Help Us Reach Our $20,000 Goal

While the Coats for Kids Fund is actively working toward becoming a self-sustaining program, we still need the community’s help to bridge the gap.

This year’s fundraising goal is $20,000. Meeting this target will allow us to purchase the 1,150 coats needed for this winter while continuing to build the program’s endowment, ensuring that no local child has to face the cold without a coat in the years to come.
