The End of the “AI-Free” Internet in Schools

Google just made an announcement that officially marks the end of the “AI-free” internet—and it is forcing a massive decision onto every K–12 school board in the country.
In response to teachers and parents wanting more classroom control, Google announced that starting in early 2027, all AI tools—including Gemini—will be turned OFF by default for K–12 student accounts unless schools explicitly opt in.
Here is the catch: if a school chooses not to opt in to AI, their students also lose access to regular Google Search. Google stated plainly that AI is now so deeply woven into how search works that it is no longer technically possible to separate them. Alongside this, they rolled out a new “Guided Learning” mode in Search and Classroom that prevents students from copying homework answers and instead asks probing questions step-by-step.
