Longtime entrepreneur, community leader, and U.S. Navy veteran Nick Nerangis was recently spotlighted in the official U.S. Naval Academy alumni magazine, Shipmate, bringing renewed attention to his multi-chapter career and his acclaim on the independent film circuit.

Act I: Naval Service & Foundations of Leadership

Nick graduated from the United States Naval Academy with the Class of 1963. During his early military service as a naval officer, he deployed aboard the historic 1964 nuclear task force world cruise (Operation Sea Orbit), where he even organized a vocal performance group among the crew. That blend of discipline, command presence, and artistic curiosity would define the rest of his life.

Act II: Building an Empire with Nerangis Enterprises (NMC)

Following his military service, Nick established himself as a pillar of regional commerce in Virginia’s Northern Shenandoah Valley. As co-founder of Nerangis Management Corporation (NMC), he spent more than five decades developing and managing high-profile hospitality, restaurant, and commercial properties throughout Winchester and Frederick County:

• Restaurant Franchising: Oversaw multiple high-volume McDonald’s franchises across the region, earning four national system-wide awards for community leadership and the prestigious Ronald McDonald Award.

• Hospitality & Entertainment: Brought the popular 8-screen Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to Winchester and developed major local lodging destinations, including Comfort Inn & Suites and Country Inn & Suites by Radisson.

• Commercial Hubs: Developed and continues to manage Kernstown Commons, a central retail destination featuring national dining and retail brands alongside NMC’s entertainment properties.

• Civic Devotion: Along with his late wife, Kathy, Nerangis co-founded First Night Winchester and earned numerous honors, including the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber’s Lifetime Community Impact Award and the Rotary Club’s Distinguished Service Plus Award.

Act III: A Return to the Stage & Indie Film Acclaim

Nick began performing as a child dancer in New York at age six, but put performing on hold to serve his country and build his businesses. At age 59, he made the bold decision to formally return to his craft, enrolling at Shenandoah University to earn a degree in acting and directing (detailed in his Shenandoah University Alumni Profile).

That decision kicked off a prolific third career:

• Television & Regional Stage: Built credits with regional equity companies like The Wayside Theatre, alongside roles on hit television series including House of Cards, The West Wing, America’s Most Wanted, and Homicide: Life on the Street.

• Film Festival Wins: Earned several Best Actor awards on the festival circuit, including honors from the World Music and Independent Film Festival for his leading performance in the dark comedy/thriller A Little Off the Top, as well as starring in the feature film Spent.
